Tour 5: Explore the Peaks of Otter
The historic Johnson Farm, accessible by trail from the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, is the one remaining property from the community that existed around this vacation resort prior to the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Currently operated and furnished as it appeared in the 1930s, costumed interpreters work the farm on a daily basis and offer interpretive discussions and programs for the Parkway visitors. Enjoy a guided hike of the Johnson’s Farm Loop trail and a sampling of the peaceful, natural beauty that is the Peaks of Otter.
Speaking of a sampling, your next stop will provide a more literal taste of the Blue Ridge. Nearby Johnson’s Orchards & Peaks of Otter Winery is a family owned and operated farm located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The farm consists of 200+ acres and has around 7,500 apple trees with almost 200 different varieties planted. Their facilities include: a log cabin with modern restroom facilities, a pavilion for picnicking, as well as a 15-foot statue of Johnny Appleseed. There are also many trails in the orchard for walking and hiking with a breathtaking view from any point. The onsite store is housed in the old packing shed, with displays of apples, peaches, nectarines and plums, cold cider from the press, and lots of jellies, jams, butters and relishes. The facility also houses the Peaks of Otter Winery, located in the cellar. Producing over 25 different fruit wines, their winery is just as versatile as their orchards.
